National Safe Motherhood Day 2022 Live Updates: Every year, ‘National Safe Motherhood Day is celebrated in the country today (April 11). This day is known to promote awareness about the importance of proper access to healthcare for pregnant women during pregnancy, childbirth, and post-delivery. The campaign was launched by the White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI). Every year thousands of pregnant women in the country die due to a lack of prenatal proper care and care. The Government of India acted on the proposal of the White Ribbon Alliance India and recognized April 11 as ‘National Safe Motherhood Day.
12% maternal mortality rate in India
In India, about 45,000 women lose their lives during childbirth every year. That’s about 12 percent of worldwide deaths. At the time of giving birth in the country, 167 out of every 100,000 women go into the mouth of the girl. However, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the maternal mortality rate in India is declining rapidly. The country has succeeded in reducing the maternal mortality rate by more than 65 percent as compared to the global achievement of 47 percent in the period 1990 to 2011-13.
What does safe motherhood mean?
Safe motherhood means ensuring that all women receive the care they need to be safe and healthy during pregnancy and childbirth. Annual campaigns such as The National Safe Motherhood Day aim to raise awareness that every woman has the right to live and survive during pregnancy and childbirth.
History of National Safe Motherhood Day
The Government of India, at the request of the White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI), a coalition of 1,800 organizations, had declared April 11, the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi, as national safe motherhood day in 2003. India is the first country in the world to officially declare a national safe motherhood day. On this day, many programs are organized across the country to give proper attention to the nutrition of pregnant women.
