World Sickle Cell Day: A sickle cell in the blood is a dangerous disease that can even kill a serious patient. However, a conscious patient can lead a normal life through treatment. World Sickle Cell Awareness Day is observed on 19th June every year to raise public awareness about the disease and its methods of treatment.

Anemia begins to occur

Dr. Tulika Chandra, in charge of the blood transfusion department at KGMU, says, is a born disease. The body has different hemoglobin. It is hemoglobin ‘S’ which is shaped like English letters S and Sickle. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited genetic abnormality of hemoglobin. This abnormality gets stuck in small blood cells, thereby slowing down blood circulation and oxygen in parts of the body. It causes anemia in the patient’s body. The normal RBC is about 120 days old, while these defective cells survive for a maximum of 10 to 20 days.

Hemoglobin is usually shaped in ‘O’ shape, says Dr. Gaurav Kharya, chief specialist in blood disorders. Hemoglobin delivers oxygen to different parts of the body. However, due to the faulty size of hemoglobin in this disease, red blood cells connect to form clusters and do not flow easily into blood vessels. These clusters become obstacles to the arteries and veins, preventing the flow of oxygen-rich blood into the body properly. According to a recent report, India ranks second in the disease.

Symptoms of the disease

Chronic kidney disease causes pulmonary hypertension, gallstones, splenomegaly, immunodeficiency, especially hip, stroke or paralysis, foot ulcers, retinopathy, endocrine disorders, etc.

Blood transfusion, balanced eating is treated

The patient can lead a normal life through blood transfusion and balanced and nutritious food. Also, you must have future partner gene testing before marriage. If either of them has this disease, there is a risk of developing in the child as well. The disease occurs in one of the 50,000.
