The Supreme Court has granted bail to Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV, in the interior designer Anvay Naik suicide case. The court ordered the release of Arnab Goswami on a personal bond of 50 thousand.
Legendary lawyer Harish Salve appeared on behalf of Arnab Goswami
During the hearing in the Supreme Court, veteran lawyer Harish Salve appeared on behalf of Arnab Goswami. Salve said, ‘Anvay Naik’s firm was in deficit for the last 7 years. It is possible that he killed his mother first and then suicide himself. Salve claimed that Arnab Goswami had paid all the dues on time. Salve alleged that Raigad police did not follow the proper legal procedure in reopening the suicide case.
Maharashtra Police acted with malice: Harish Salve
Advocate Harish Salve alleged that the Maharashtra Police had filed several cases against Arnab Goswami and Republic TV in the past few days as a malicious gesture. He claimed that the Maharashtra Police has reopened the Anvay Naik suicide case on the instructions of Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.
‘Arnab’s cases should be handed over to CBI’
Harish Salve said that Arnab Goswami was arrested by Maharashtra Police on 4 November. The local magistrate should have released him on a personal bond. But this was not done. He demanded from the Supreme Court that the cases against Arnab Goswami were handed over to the CBI. He said that if Arnab Goswami is granted bail then no sky will be broken.
Maharashtra government opposes bail
Senior lawyers Kapil Sibal and Amit Desai cross-examined the Supreme Court on behalf of the Maharashtra government. Opposing the bail, Kapil Sibal said that the hearing is already going on in the lower court in this case. Therefore, the Supreme Court should not bail the accused yet. Opposing the bail, Amit Desai also said that a decision can be taken in the lower court tomorrow. Desai said that the police investigating the case have obtained much evidence in this case and should be allowed to present it in the court.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday heard the interim bail plea of Arnab Goswami, editor-in-chief of Republic TV. During this, the court made a strong comment on the Maharashtra government and said that if the state governments target anyone, then it would be a violation of justice.

During the hearing, Justice Chandrachud said, ‘If we as a Constitutional Court do not protect personal liberty, then who will? If the state governments deliberately target a person, then they should know that there is an apex court to protect the freedom of citizens.
Why Arnab Goswami is in jail
Arnab Goswami was arrested by the Mumbai police in a two-year-old case of abetting interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother for suicide. Late evening, Arnab Goswami’s court in Aligarh was presented in Raigad district, after which the court sent him to 14 days judicial custody. After this, the Bombay High Court refused to grant bail and asked them to go to the local court for relief. Arnab challenged the denial of bail by the Bombay High Court in the Supreme Court.
There is a charge of not giving 5.4 crore dues
Apart from Urban Goswami, Feroz Mohammed Sheikh and Nitesh Sarada are also accused in the suicide case, which has been arrested by the police. The CID was ordered to re-examine the case of a 53-year-old interior designer and his mother committing suicide after allegedly not paying dues by Arnab Goswami, Feroze Sheikh, and Nitesh Sarada. The suicide note allegedly written by Anvay Naik said that the accused had not paid his Rs 5.4 crore, so he had to take the step of suicide.
