After the IPL 2020 in UAE due to Coronavirus last year, this year the tournament is being held back in India. The tournament will begin in Chennai from 9 April, with the Royal Challengers Bangalore, captained by the defending and five-time champions Mumbai Indians and Virat Kohli, face-to-face. The match will start at 07:30 in the evening. The final match of the tournament will be played on May 30 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. A four-match Test series and a five-match T20 were played between India and England recently at this ground.

According to the BCCI, this time in the league stage each team will play at four venues. There will be a total of 56 matches in the league phase out of which Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru will host 10–10 while Ahmedabad and Delhi will host eight each. It said that a feature of this IPL will be that all matches will be played at neutral venues and no team will play at their home ground. All teams will play in four of the six places on the league stage.

In this season, all teams will have to finish 20 overs in 90 minutes. This means that the team will get 90 minutes for an innings, including five minutes of strategic time out. Also, there will be no soft signal rule this year. Apart from this, in view of the controversy in the previous season, this time the BCCI has also entrusted the responsibility of short-run check to the third umpire.
