Down Syndrome Day: Down syndrome, also known as trisomy 21, is a condition in which excess genetic material causes delays in the way a child develops mentally and physically. According to the Down Syndrome Federation of India, the largest number of children of this syndrome in the world are born in India. Normally one out of every 830 born children suffers from Down syndrome, the same year about 23 to 29 thousand children are born with this syndrome.

Dr. Ashutosh Niranjan, the neonatal and pediatrician of the District Women’s Hospital, explains that Down syndrome is one of the major disorders of genetic congenital disorders. This disease occurs in the womb of the mother to the newborn. Down syndrome is caused by an abnormal number of chromosomes in the body. In general, a person has 46 chromosomes in his body. Of these, 23 chromosomes (chromosomes) belong to the genes of the mother and 23 to the father. Newborns with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes. An additional addition of chromosomes affects the body and brain development. In most cases, the offspring inherit the extra chromosome from the mother’s genes. The extra chromosome is called trisomy 21.

Down syndrome can be detected through triple testing

Dr. Niranjan explains that Down syndrome can be detected during pregnancy through triple testing and ultrasonography. According to the investigation, if the child is suffering from Down syndrome, then her miscarriage is done. The doctor says that a woman who is pregnant above 35 years of age should undergo chromosome analysis.

Down syndrome is congenital pathology

DEIC Manager of the National Child Health Program, Gaurish Raj Pal, states that one of the 4Ds under RBSK is the Defect at Birth, which is a condition of Down syndrome in congenital malformation. There is no cure for this pathology, but therapy and medical treatment are given according to the problem. According to the Down Syndrome Federation of India, in the year 1960, children suffering from this disease could not even set the age of 10, but now the average age has reached 50-60 years with the help of therapy, separate special schools, and medical aid.
